With One Voice

The conciliar norms regarding reform of the liturgy have given the choir's function greater prominence and importance. The choir is responsible for the correct performance of the parts that belong to it and for helping the faithful to take an active part in the singing.

Musicam Sacram 1967

Those who take on responsibility in the music ministry are presumed to be of good faith, eager to serve their fellow Christians, and willing to engage in ongoing formation to improve the effectiveness of their service. While the opportunities are numerous the laborers are often few. Establishing a robust music ministry is a common challenge in parishes and with music at the very heart of sound liturgical practice it frequently falls to the few to motivate the many.

Choir members, musicians and animators are invited to this program of training and formation which will provide guidelines for the ministry and practical training in the following:

  1. The importance and role of the choir in the liturgy today.
    • What the Church documents say.
    • Expectations of the parish community and clergy.
  2. Practical Tips for Choirs.
    • Building a parish choir.
    • Recruitment challenges.
    • To “audition” or not to “audition” Rehearsal techniques.
    • Placement of the Choir Acoustical support
  3. Developing the Music Programme:
    • Choosing repertoire for the choir
    • Music Publishers/Internet Choral Resources (What’s free!)
    • Getting the balance right between choir & assembly.
  4. Payment of musicians/choir directors
  5. Copyright, Music library & Budgeting issues.

This will be a morning well spent for those interested in broadening their knowledge of how to choose suitable music for the Sunday Liturgy. It will help further enhance your parish’s understanding and experience of music in the liturgy and the sense of the sacred.
