"This wonderful gift of the Eucharist, which is the greatest gift of all, demands that such an important Mystery should be increasingly better known and its saving power more fully shared." Pope John Paul II - Immensae Caritatis In addition to the ordained clergy, there are many laypeople who assist at the altar in our churches as Acolytes, adult Altar Servers, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC). Prospective and presently serving ministers are invited to this program of training and formation which will provide guidelines for the ministry and practical training in the following areas:
The program is offered over 2 full days. Attendance at the requisite number of sessions is required for certified recognition of completion and eligibility in particular for institution to the ministry of acolyte. Adult servers who complete the first three sessions will be eligible to be commissioned by their respective parishes by their parish priests. A certificate of mandate will be given to those completing the first four sessions who will in turn be deemed eligible for renewal of the annual commission as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion in their parishes by their parish priests. Eligible candidates completing ALL five sessions may request institution into the ministry of acolyte by the Archbishop of Sydney at a time and place to be advised. In circumstances where it is not possible for a candidate to attend both days at a given venue, arrangements can be made to attend the requisite sessions split over two venues although this is not recommended. Attendance is recorded.
